Destroyed by Urban Renewal efforts in the 1980’s, the Bottom was once a thriving black neighborhood in Knoxville, Tennessee. In order to force residents out of their cherished community, the city of Knoxville closed grocery stores and created a food desert that still remains today. As we move into the future of architecture and planning, community awareness as well as greener design opportunities are essential. The Swan Brothers’ Grocery store is a Co-operative venture that utilizes the building of the former Sawn Brothers’ Bread Bakery. Through adaptive reuse, the nearly 100 year old building is able to live a new life while also providing a crucial service to the neighborhood.

Unlike traditional forced movement, grocery plans, The Swan Borther’s Grocery Store focuses on the slowness of shopping and creating a gathering space for the community.
